Fan or Foe?

Instance #1. DALLAS STARS

The end of the 2008 season’s for all Dallas has unfortunately ended with the Dallas Stars losing 4 games to 2. The hockey season and playoffs were bittersweet for the Stars and the fans. They fought tough series against the defending champs and number defense, Anaheim Mighty Ducks, then the San Jose Sharks, lastly the unrelenting, Detroit Red Wings. We, as in Dallas, played very strong and with heart all the way through. Knowing that the Stars are stacked with young players and starting the playoffs as the 5th seed, as fans we always hope for the best and didn’t expect them to go deep into the Western Conference Finals! As a fan in this situation, do you stand up and applaud their efforts throughout the season or do you boo initially?

Instance #2. Dallas Mavericks.

If you are a true fan you have been through it thick and thin and really know the sweat and money that has through getting quality post players like Popeye Jones (best out of all), Eduardo Najera, Calvin Booth, Juwan Howard, Keith Van Horn, Christian Laettner, Dennis Rodman (~12 games), Raef LaFrentz, Shawn Bradley, and best of all, Erick Dampier (some reason, I’d rather have Bradley back…) Anyway, my point is if you were a fan before Don Nelson days, then you know what has come and gone…the types of shocks from bad calls, wild shots from Nash or Dirk, losing 4 games in the 2006 Finals after winning the first 2 games (yes, u can blame former Dallas Mayor Laura Miller for publicly announcing a parade prior to it being over), getting whooped by Nelson and his Warriors, and then to CP3 and the Hornets. As a fan, do you feel that you have completely wasted your time the last 4+ years? Watching all those games and taunting other fans? Don’t you feel stupid now…with Jason Kidd and his massive contract. This team is in shambles and I honestly don’t think a new coach (Rick Carlisle) will be the answer. Since the day I was a fan, I have felt that we needed a 1 guard that is compatible with a stud center. We have never had that! So how do you feel? For me, still a fan of course but I won’t go as far by purchasing game tickets (only ones will be Mavs playing the Knicks at MSG just cuz I’ll be there and the Knicks suck too)

Instance No. 3 Oh the BOYs

In the new millenium, you are a Cowboys fan if you have stuck thru (after Emmitt) Troy Hambrick..Woody Dantzler..(after Aikman) Anthony Wright..Vinny Testeverde..Randall Cunningham…Clint Stoerner…Drew Bledsoe..(drug addict #54) Quincy Carter days..can’t forget Drew Henson…Chad Hutchinson…tyrant Ryan Leaf. Anyway we are grateful to have Tony Romo from Eastern Illinois drop in our laps. I like to think of him as a Steve Nash, you know what you are going to get from him but yet unpredictable at times during the game which keeps you on the edge of the seat. So yeah Cowboy fans, I am sure you are pissed that Romo had the ball slip out of his hands vs. the Seahawks two years ago and that Patrick Crayton didn’t pull in the ball when that exact play could have been a game-turning play vs. the Giants. It’s all said and done. In spite of a spectacular record and records being broken, it’s definitely the momentum you have going into starting the playoffs (counts more in football than basketball, note: Mavs in 2007) For the last few years, we’ve been known to play like crap in December and it stood the same, we got rocked out in the first round. In Texas and Mexico, you must be a Cowboys fan for LIFE. If not, you are not a Texan (not Houston Texan).

But overall, at the end of a hard fought season, would you cheer and applaud your team in their final game or boo them till they leave the playing field? And complain & cry all night and next morning about what should have been done?

Note: Apologies to Rangers baseball fans, the last time I’ve paid attention to an entire season is when we traded Pudge. But ya, I’ll go to one or two games every two years for a $1 hot dog! Better yet, IKEA for 50 cents..ahh the rangers…

Breathless mavericks..

April 30, 2008

Where has all the spark and team chemistry gone? It is unfortunate to say but even though the Mavericks needed a change during the season, I tried to make myself believe that the KIDD trade was beneficial for us. BUT, Kidd doesn’t fit into Avery’s offensive scheme AT ALL (despite Dirk wanting Kidd on the team). How can there be on-court leadership when Avery is still calling the plays. And as much as I USED to like Stackhouse…he has been acting up since his two seasons full of injuries. His action of knocking the ball out of CP3’s hands shows how the Mavs progressed this season in complete fashion: Getting irritated; therefore acting up because they could not handle the pressure.

Our “top” off-season transaction: the elder Eddie Jones = What happened?

Re-signing: Devean George = oh what a selfish person, if he wanted to stay we couldn’t he prove himself he was worthy..

During season signing: Juwan who = What’s the purpose really?

Did all those nagging injuries throughout the year never allow the MAVS to get on any sustainable winning streak? Regardless, the 2007 season seemed fatal starting from GAME 1 in November.

Even though we still have some talent (i.e. Brandon Bass), Dallas is definitely in a rebuilding mode. J-Ho is being a baby and has to regain some value because he is slowly going to be “weeded” out until he gets traded for nothing. Either way, somehow Mavericks’ CONFIDENCE must regain new form and no, not the same one from 2006 playoff run. We cannot revert back to saying that. It’s a whole new scheme and it may include some personnel shake up or realization.

One thing is for sure, let’s sign a big center that’s not afraid to catch and slam the ball the way Bass does!

I will continue to be a lifetime fan of the Mavericks; however, I refuse to buy tickets until they shift gears move in a direction that will be positive for this franchise. But for now Dallas fans, LET’S GO STARS!! 3-0 to date.

P.S.

I am holding onto my Devin Harris jersey because hey! maybe he will return to Dallas in 10 years…
